Programs for US Students

The Aral Sea is a global lesson about the interdependence of man and nature. Although the sea is gone, the indigenous populations inhabiting the region still face the consequences. Central to our work are our annual student-run projects. Over 2016-2018, 13 students from Columbia University, Barnard College, Vassar College and Uzbekistan have participated in our active service project. Under their leadership, we oversee the installation of ecological engineering solutions and lead an educational program with rural high-schoolers in the region. Participating students, in turn, gain valuable insight on the unique challenges of water scarcity in Central Asia and the dynamics of organizing charitable projects.

Under the guidance of WARC, a team of students from the US and Uzbekistan oversee an ecological project. Over 14 days, they help install reverse osmosis filters and lead an ecological advocacy program for rural high schoolers. Under WARC’s supervision, the students develop their own educational curriculum fit for their skillset.

A trip with us to Uzbekistan not only involves the opportunity to help a community in need, but also opens the door to an adventure through the historic center of the Silk Road.

As part of your trip to Uzbekistan, you will have the chance to visit the ancient Timurid capital of Samarkand, resplendent with old Turko-Persian architecture, and the famed Bibi-Khanym Mosque, one of the most beautiful mosques in the Islamic world. You will also admire contemporary Uzbek society in the ultra-modern Tashkent. On your way to Muynak, you will pass through the Ustyurt plateau, a famed site for ecological tourists for its unusual geological formations reminiscent of Martian terrain. From there, you will watch the sun set upon the vast Central Asian Steppes.

Finally, you will visit Muynak and, in working on various projects of our charity, you will have the unique chance to observe the consequences of climate destruction. You will visit the famed ship graveyard and the dried Port of Muynak. Work will include the planting of saxaul trees, aid in the local hospital and backyard-gardening. You will intimately become aquainted with another culture and befriend the inhabitants of Muynak. You will also have the option to visit the small remainder of the Aral and admire what once was the most popular sea of the Soviet Union.
